September Mystery Photo Revealed

The September Mystery Photo was a stumper! It showed a mansard-roofed house with a 3-story addition that faced toward the Stone Wharf Road – not the ocean. The photo above shows the building in relation to its neighborhood, which provides lots of clues. The Hill Crest Hotel evolved from Charlie Hamilton’s home to a summer hotel that could feed 100! It burned to the ground on August 3, 1924, along with its annex and two neighboring Greek Revival homes. The “New Hillcrest”, built by island contractors, opened on July 10, 1925, 11 months after the fire.
