CIHS Does Not Hibernate

Historical Society Board members, staff, and volunteers have been hard at work throughout the winter, preparing for the summer season.  Besides Board meetings, budget preparation, cataloging artifacts, writing grant proposals, and ordering for the gift shop, we are: planning the 2026 Ellsworth Miller Lecture Series; completing an energy evaluation of the Museum building, with program recommendations; upgrading the stairs on the building’s south side; renovating the entry ramp and perhaps re-setting the stone walkway; upgrading our technology systems; and refreshing the outside bathroom for the new season.

Our thanks to everyone who has been working through the “off-season”, and to our membership and the granting agencies who make such progress possible!

April Mystery Photo

How many of these questions can you answer? Name of wharf? Name of ledge on left? Current owners of the 2 cottages? Name of large building? Extra credit: What is the building with the cupola on the right in the distance, and what is there now?

Send your guesses to [email protected].

March Mystery Photo Revealed

Many people recognized the March Mystery photo as the shore at the end of Fenderson Road. Binkie Boxer had some great memories of playing on the shore there in the 1950s. Betty Healy, the artist, frequently painted there in the 1950s, 60s, and early 70s. This painting of Ellsworth Miller’s camp and fish house, as well as the Sawyer camp (white), was probably painted in the late 1960s, when Warren and Lorraine Doughty summered there with their kids. The clothes line on the beach is the clue! Carla Widlund Joyce says she is the girl in the red bathing suit! The Miller camp and fish house were taken down c. 2012 due to erosion.
